After more than a decade of work exposing the pollution in Madrid, Ecologists in Action has just launched a lawsuit against Alberto Ruiz Gallardon and Ana Botella for endangering the health of locals. An estimated 2,000 people die prematurely in Madrid due to pollution caused by traffic, particularly nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter PM 2.5. The City Council of Madrid has had ten years to adapt to the maximum levels of contamination that requires from January 2011 the European standard. The policy has been to invest in major infrastructure that encourage the use of the car and left indebted the town for the next 30 years. Nothing has been done to reduce traffic pollution by reducing car use and promoting public transportation and bicycle and pedestrian mobility. Politicians in general and in particular the council should set an example to the citizenry and move on foot, bicycle or public transport, giving the official car. The savings would remove 140 cars from Madrid city officials (of which only the mayor of costing us € 600,000) would allow for example to launch the bicycle rental system public, the mayor stopped with the excuse of crisis. The emergence of the Foundation Equo this summer driven among others by well-known environmentalists as Juantxo Lopez de Uralde, Alejandro Sanchez and Santiago MartÃn Barajas, suggests that the green tide sweeping across Europe and other countries such as Brazil and Colombia, will finally cross the Pyrenees. Like many thousands of citizens committed to the struggle for ecological justice and social equity, looking at the entry into the Congress of Deputies of the new party of Political Ecology EQUO behind the project. The Greens are going to be in the process, participating in local and regional elections of May with our candidates, and adding our contribution to the thousands of activists in the constitutional process to be convened for Equo autumn and we present the general elections of 2012 London, Paris or Berlin are green council, why not London? I think it's time that we go green in the City and have taken up the challenge of trying with little more resources than my bike, my convictions and my career. Madrid is possible a more healthy, livable, caring. Stop This requires a breath of fresh air at City Hall. You can reach the City Council with a bicycle. You only need the vote of one hundred thousand Madrid on 22 May.
